AARON WHIPPLE, Croydon, Great (3) Grandson of Matthew Whipple, Jr. 23 August 1832 Aaron Whipple of Croydon, Sullivan County, NH, 71, deposed: that he enlisted in 1777 about the latter part of August, under Capt. Moses Whipple for two months; went with the Company from Croydon, where he then resided to White Creek; from there to Saratoga, where he remained until after Burgoyne was taken; “While we were at Saratoga, Maj. Whitcomb raised a company of volunteers to pass the North River and take Burgoyne’s Picket Guard. He was one of that company and we succeeded, took and carried away the Picket Guard, 37 horses, and 100 men and carried them across the river to our encampment.” About 10 days after Burgoyne’s surrender, he was dismissed and went home. The affidavit of Thomas Whipple is the only proof he has of that service. That in May or June, 1781 he again enlisted under Capt. Nelson, Col. Benjamin Wait, for six months; went to Corinth, Vt. where he was stationed until his time was out he was dismissed late in the fall and returned home; that he was born in Grafton, Worcester County, Mass. 22 March 1761, lived in Croydon when he enlisted and never received a written discharge. Signed Aaron Whipple. Rev. Jacob Haven and Sherman Cooper, both of Croyden, certified that it is the general belief in the neighborhood in which Aaron Whipple lives, that he has been a soldier in the Revolution, in which opinion we concur. Signed Jacob Haven, Sherman Cooper. 22 August 1832 Thomas Whipple of Charlestown, N.H. formerly of Croyden, 73, testified that while living at Croyden in the latter part of June, 1777, information came from New York that assistance was wanted. His father, Moses Whipple was at that time commander of the Company of Militia. He immediately called them together told them the situation and nearly half of the company turned out and marched with his father to meet the enemy. Among them was his brother Aaron. He [Thomas Whipple] remembers perfectly seeing Aaron and his father Moses Whipple marching together. They were gone two months or more, returning home late in the fall. “The reason why I so well remember the fact is, I had no person to help me collect our corn and potatoes,” on account of their being away; that in the early part of May or first of June, 1781, he remembers that his brother Aaron again enlisted for six months, and served under Capt. Charles Nelson, Col. Wait, at Corinth, Vt. Daniel Rooks and Ezekiel Rooks enlisted at the same time. They marched off together. During the summer the town called a meeting to see about paying the men, at which he [Thomas Whipple] was present. They voted to pay Aaron Whipple and the two Rooks for their service. Later Ezekiel Rooks was taken ill and hired Sherman Cooper to take his place. Late in the fall the three came home together. Signed Thomas Whipple. 23 August 1832 Sherman Cooper of Croyden, 71, testified to his service as substitute for Ezekiel Rooks that Aaron Whipple was in service when he reached Corinth, and that the two were discharged at the same time and returned home together. Signed Sherman Cooper. 23 August 1830 a Certificate was filed from the Town Clerk of Croyden, that 19 July 1781 the town “voted to pay Aaron Whipple, Ezekiel and Daniel Rooks for their services in the war this present year.” Attest: Jacob Haven, Town Clerk. Claim allowed and Certificate 2889, was issued 7 December 1832 under Act of 7 June 1832. (Only Revolutionary Pensioner named Aaron Whipple from any state. BMD).
Aaron was born 3-22-1761; died in 1838; married Matilda Cooper.

From there he passed through New Jersey to Pennsylvania, where he was stationed a whole month, and then was marched to “Gulf Hill,” Pa.; that he was next stationed at Valley Forge where Gen. After serving eight months and a half (the time for which he enlisted, being eight months), he was verbally discharged at Valley Forge; but his discharge and Sergeant’s Warrant were burned a few years since, with his house. That in the early part of May, 1777, he again volunteered and marched to Ticonderoga where he served two months under Capt. Solomon Chase, Col. Chase’s regiment, until he was taken with measles and was discharged and went home sick; that about the latter part of July, 1780 he enlisted as a substitute for James Hall who had before that time enlisted for six months under Capt. Reynolds, Major Whitcomb, and served as a substitute two months at Haverhill, N.H. then he hired John Hall as a substitute to serve out the remainder of James Hall’s term and he (Thomas Whipple) went home. That in October 1780 when news came of the burning of Royalton he volunteered again as a soldier under Capt. Whipple, Col. Chase, marched as far as Sharon, adjoining Royalton when they were informed that the enemy had left Royalton, so they were immediately ordered to Newbury, Vt. where they stayed three months and then returned home. That he was born at Grafton, Mass. 16 June 1759, lived in Croyden when called into service, and continued to reside there until 1809 when he moved to Charlestown, N.H. where he has resided ever since; that while in service at Ticonderoga he lost his wife. Signed Thomas Whipple. Hon. Henry Hubbard and Hiram Hall, both of Charlestown, N.H., certified that it is the general belief in the neighborhood in which Thomas Whipple lives, that he has been a soldier in the Revolution, in which opinion we concur. Signed Henry Hubbard and Hiram Bell. 29August 1832 James Hall of Croyden, 76, testified to the accuracy of the soldier’s statements concerning him; also that in the next winter, when he went to get for John Hall, the service which he rendered at the close of the six months, he found that the name of John Hall was there for the whole six months, and neither his nor Whipple’s appeared at all. Signed James Hall
19 August 1832 Aaron Whipple of Croyden, N.H., 71, testified that “Thomas Whipple and himself are the sons of Moses Whipple” and certified to the correctness of Thomas Whipple’s statement. Signed Aaron Whipple
Claim allowed and Certificate 3326, New Hampshire Agency, was issued 18 December 1832 under Act of 7 June 1832. (This Thomas plus another Thomas at the end of this series are the only Revolutionary Pensioners named Thomas Whipple from any state. BMD).
SARAH WHIPPLE, WIDOW, Concord
Husband, Benjamin Whipple of Ipswich, Mass. Service
31 December 1838 Sarah Whipple of Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, 82, deposed: that she is the widow of Benjamin Whipple, Great (2) Grandson of Matthew Whipple, Jr., Revolutionary soldier who enlisted in 1776 at Ipswich, Mass under Capt Robert Dodge, Massachusetts troops, served six months, and was then discharged; that he also served at the Battle of Bennington, and was at the surrender of Burgoyne, being absent about two years; that she was married to Benjamin Whipple at Hamilton, Mass. 14 Dec. 1780; and that her husband died 1 April 1824. Signed by Sarah Whipple. 23 October 1838 Rev. George W. Kelly, pastor of the Congregational Church at Hamilton, Mass., certified that the marriage of Benjamin Whipple to Sarah Tuttle, both of Hamlet, on 14 Dec. 1780, was recorded on the records of the Church by Rev. Dr. Cutler, then settled pastor. Signed George W. Kelly. 30 August 1838 David Hammond of Bow, Merrimack County, N.H., 80, testified that he was well acquainted with Benjamin Whipple who lived at Bow, N.H., the latter part of his life, and died there 14 or 15 years previous; that in 1776 he lived in Ipswich, Mass., served under Capt. Robert Dodge six months and was stationed at Dorchester Point; Benjamin Whipple, who was also of Ipswich at that time, enlisted in Dodge’s Company also and they served together for six months and were discharged at the same time. While he (David Hammond) knows that Whipple served also at Bennington, he was not in his company and can not testify from personal knowledge of the length of service although he has heard Whipple say that he served between two and three years in the Revolutionary War. He knows also that Benjamin Whipple married Sarah Tuttle of Ipswich; moved from there to Bow, where they lived until his death; and that the widow has never remarried. Signed by mark.
(An annotation on this affidavit sates that Hammond is a Revolutionary Pensioner under Act of 15 May 1828 at $80.00 per annum, and placed on pension roll 12 Sept. 1828. BMD). 26 December 1838 John Whipple of Concord, N.H., 48, testified that he is the fourth son of Benjamin and Sarah Whipple; that his father died as stated (he having seen him after death), and that his mother has remained a widow. Signed by John Whipple.
Claim allowed for six months service as was her subsequent claim, made 26 April 1843 while 87, the last certificate 1005 being issued 20 July 1843 under Act of 3 March 1843 for service in Massachusetts Militia. (This is apparently the only Benjamin Whipple for whose service a woman has obtained a pension, but there was a Revolutionary Pensioner named Benjamin Whipple who was born in Coventry, R.I. 21 Sept. 1762; served from Plainfield, Conn. and in 1832 was a resident of Johnson, R.I. These two are the only Revolutionary Pensioners of the name from any state. BMD).
Corporal Samuel Whipple, New Hampshire, born 8-28-1749, died 12-8-1782; married Lucy Brown.

WHIPPLE, Thomas, Peeling, N.H.
21 April 1818 Thomas Whipple of Peeling, Grafton County, New Hampshire, 66, deposed: That he enlisted in March, 1777 in Vermont under Capt. William Macune or McCune of the Green Mountain Boys commanded by Col. Warner and continued to serve until July or August 1778 when he was furloughed on account of ill health which disabled him from further service for the rest of the three years for which he enlisted.
That he formerly lived in Brattleborough, Vt. and in June, 1775 enlisted from there as a private under Capt. Danforth, Col. David Brewer, in Gen. Ward’s Brigade (Massachusetts Line) for eight months and served out his term, and before its expiration he had re-enlisted in the same company for one year, and served until January 1777 when he was discharged at Ticonderoga, but none of the company received written discharges.
That in March 1777 he enlisted again as a non commissioned officer under Capt. William McCune, Col. Warner, as previously stated; and that his warrant as a Sergeant was stolen from him with his pocket containing $30.00 which he had never seen since.
1 May 1818 Jonathan Tyler of Piermont, NH testified to service with Thomas Whipple a Sergeant in the Green Mountain Boys from March 1777 until July or August of that year he (Tyler) was taken prisoner by the British.
20 June 1818 Stephen Jenkins of Bradford, Vt. testified to acquaintance with Sergeant Thomas Whipple from March 1777 and to service with him under Capt. McCune for over nine months.
Claim allowed and Certificate 10168 New Hampshire Agency was issued 3 May 1819 under Act of 18 March 1818.

His name was dropped from the roll on account of property but restored in May 1823 when the Selectmen of Wheeling, Thomas Vincent, Jr., Samuel Nute, Jr., Benjamin Fox, and Thomas Walker, J.P., testified in his behalf. At that time the name of his wife was given as Rody, she being 57, and almost blind.
28 December 1829 Thomas Whipple applied for and obtained a transfer of pension to New York, he living at that time with a son-in-law and daughter. Walter Whipple and Paul Tabor of Rochester, N.Y. certified to his identity.
16 May 1832 he applied for and obtained a transfer to the territory of Michigan, Wayne County, to which place his children had moved.
14 August 1838 Walter Whipple wrote the department from Tecumseh, Lenawee County, Michigan stating that his father, Thomas Whipple died 8 August 1833 and his widow died 25 August 1833. No place of death is mentioned by him, but in an unverified letter on file in the case from Milwaukee in 1906 the statement is made that the soldier and his widow died at Adrian, Michigan.

OLIVE WHIPPLE, WIDOW, Cumberland
Husband, Preserved Whipple. Rhode Island Service.
6 February 1838 Olive Whipple of Richmond, Cheshire County, NH, born in May 1751, deposed: that she is the widow of Preserved Whipple, Revolutionary soldier, who served a number of different times during the Revolution, near Providence and on the Island; that two of his Captains were Reuben Ballou and Amos Whipple. “We were then living in Cumberland, RI where his residence was during the whole of the war; that she was married to Preserved Whipple in October 1776 by Elder Nathaniel Cook in Cumberland; that her husband died in May 1813 at Richmond, N.H.; and she has remained a widow since his death. Signed by mark.
19 September 1837 Levi Weatherhead of Cumberland, R.I., 73, testified to service with Preserved Whipple in the spring of 1776 for one month under Capt. Elisha Waterman at Providence; and remembers Whipple’s serving under Capt. Reuben Ballard (sic) in Col. Cook’s Regiment in December 1776 and serving three months. “I served one month in December at Tiverton; also served with him three months, in three different tours, in 1779 under Capt. Amos Whipple, Col. Chad Brown at Providence; and in March 1780 we served together under Capt. Amos Whipple on the Island of Rhode Island when the French were there. Signed Levi Weatherhead.
19 September 1837, William Ballou of Cumberland, 80, testified to service with Preserved Whipple in 1776 under Reuben Ballou; for three months; and one month at Tiverton, under Capt. Amos Whipple; and in August 1778 he and Whipple were drafted into Sullivan’s expedition under Capt. Amos Whipple, Col. Matherson. “In August 1780 we served one month together under Capt. Whipple at Bristol; and in March, 1781, another month under the same Captain, but in Col. George Peck’s Regiment.
“They must have been married a number of years before the Revolutionary War for they were married and had two or three children before he went into service.” Signed William Ballou.
19 September 1837 Amaziah Weatherhead of Cumber land, R.I., 80, testified to personal knowledge of Preserved Whipple’s serving as stated in 1778 and 1789. Signed Amaziah Weatherhead.
19 September 1837 Oliver Harris of Cumberland, R.I., 78, testified to service with Preserved Whipple one month in 1777 at Providence under Capt. Timothy Willmarth. Col. Brown; and in October 1777 another month under Capt. Amos Whipple. Signed Oliver Harris.
5 February 1838 Otis Whipple of Fitzwilliam, N.H., testified that when a boy of 11, his father went to war under Capt. Amos Whipple of Cumberland. He went with his father and Capt. Whipple as far as Providence and rode behind Capt. Whipple on his horse. At that time he had two brothers living; also that he often heard his father say that he was in the Battle on Rhode Island when the Americans were forced to retreat to Tiverton. Signed Otis Whipple.
4 December 1837 Oziel Ballou testified that he was present at the marriage of Preserved Whipple and that it took place before the Revolutionary war. Preserved Whipple and Olive Ballou were lawfully married by Elder Nathaniel Cook of Cumberland. Preserved Whipple is now dead and Olive has never remarried. Signed Oziel Ballou.
Claim allowed and Certificate 1854 was issued 14 March 1838 under Act of 4 July 1836, Section 3. A note states that this was paid at the Treasury to 4 Sept. 1840 under Act of 6 April 1838 and Agent notified. This is probably the approximate date of death of Olive Whipple.
20 September 1837 the following list of children of Preserved Whipple and Olive his wife, as certified by Pardon Sayley, Town Clerk of Cumberland, RI, is as follows:
Otis, first son born 28 Dec. 1767; Preserved, second son, born 27 March 1770; Stephen, third son, born 27 Nov. 1772; Philadelphia, first daughter, born 25 April 1776; Silas, fourth son born 8 Sept. 1778; Comfort, fifth son born 7 Jan. 1781; Nancy, second daughter, born 18 Sept. 1783; Olive, third daughter, born 2 July 1786; Russell, sixth son, born 11 Aug. 1789; James, seventh son, born 30 April 1792.
