Portland, Oreg: The second in a trilogy of twenty-first century books on the historic Whipple families of America has just been published by Gateway Press of Baltimore, Maryland. 15 Generations of Whipples Descendants of Matthew Whipple of Ipswich, Massachusetts is a hard cover four volume epic story of Matthew, Jr. and his family who arrived in New England in 1638 and settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. It follows the family as its descendants kept migrating westward as the country expanded and developed. The story ends in Portland, Oregon in 2007.

Divided into two sections – historical and genealogical -, it includes 250 photographs, 20 appendixes which expand the reader’s knowledge of important Whipple family details, and an every name index of the approximately 20,000 descendants. The historical section includes 12 historical chapters on the author’s direct line. The genealogical section includes extensive biographies on many of the descendants.

The author is Blaine Whipple of Portland, Oregon. Beginning in 1956, he conducted original research in the locations where his ancestors settled, including Bocking, Essex Co., England where he obtained a copy of Matthew Whipple, Sr.’s will, dated 19 December 1616 and probated 28 January 1618-1619. The will was written in Old English, the probate in Latin, suggesting Matthew was an educated man.

Matthew, Jr. is the author’s eighth great grandfather. He is also the eighth great grandfather of President Calvin Coolidge and the seventh great grandfather of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the course of his research, Whipple discovered that many of Matthew’s descendants played an active role in their communities, in state and local government, business endeavors, agricultural pursuits, and the country’s various wars. Consequently, public records are the sources for much of the biographical information.

Whipple’s first book on the family, “Elder” John Whipple of Ipswich, Massachusetts His English Ancestors and American Descendants, was published in 2003 by Trafford Publishing Co. of Victoria, B.C. A history, it includes a genealogical section of 6,900 descendants with an every name index. Dr. Charles M. Whipple, Jr. of Oklahoma and Barbara R. Carroll of Rhode Island expect to publish a book on Captain John Whipple of Dorchester, Massachusetts and Providence, Rhode Island early in 2008. Captain Whipple was the first Whipple settler in New England, arriving on the Lyon in 1632.

Blaine Whipple, a former Oregon State Senator, has been an officer in several local genealogical organizations, editor of genealogy newsletters, long-time member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, the National Genealogical Society, and several state genealogical society organizations. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the U. of Minnesota and a Master of Science from the U. of Oregon. He has been a commercial real estate broker in Portland, Oregon since 1963, is married, and has three children and six grandchildren.
