EDWIN PERCY WHIPPLE, MID 19TH CENTURY AUTHOR, LECTURER, LITERARY CRITIC
Edwin Percy Whipple (1819-1886) married Charlotte B. Hasings in 1847. He was an author and lecturer in Boston whose literary criticism was notable. It was said that Whipple was surpassed only Edgar Allen Poe and James Russell Lowell as an informed, judicious, and comprehensive critic. (Whipple and Lowell were distant cousins through their 6th great grandfather, Matthew Whipple of Bocking, England.) After joining Boston’s Mercantile Library Assn. and the Attic Nights Club, he began writing essays of literary criticism for the Boston Times and became a popular lecturer on the Lyceum Circuit from Maine to Ohio appearing an estimated 1,000 times. He became the literary critic of the Boston Globe in 1872. He is a 9th generation member of the Matthew Whipple family. They had a son and a daughter. The rest of the details are found in my book 15 Generations of Whipples.
