SQUIRE WHIPPLE, INVENTOR OF ALBANY, NY

Posted in Family Members at 4:25 pm by admin

Squire Whipple was born 16 Sept. 1804 in Hardwick, Worcester Co., Mass. and died 15 March 1888 in Albany, Albany Co., N.Y. He married Anna Case of Utica, N.Y in 1837.  He was graduated from  Union College of Schenectady, N.Y in  1830 and became a well known civil engineer, inventor, and theoretician.   Steam engines required bridges which could support heavy live loads and he developed the first scientifically based rules for bridge construction.  Previously, wooden trusses had been built according to “rule-of-thumb” methods without scientific or mathematical means to obtain accurate quanitative information on stresses.  This method didn’t work with iron and in 1847 he published a collection of essays entitled A Work on Bridge-Building.  It was the beginning of the era of scientific bridge design.  The result:  After 1850, most bridges were made of wrought iron until near the end of the century when replaced by steel.  His formula was also important to American architecture and led to the design of the skyscraper.  He published a more thorough and exhaustive textbook in 1869:  An Elementary and Practical Treatise on Bridge-Building.  He is an eighth generation descendant of Matthew Whipple, Sr.  The rest of the details are found in my book 15 Generations of Whipples, An American Story.  Check on “Buy Now” to order through Pay Pal or buy direct from the author.
